WTW recently acquired a strategic stake in Atomos, a wealth manager previously known as Sanlam Wealth and backed by Oaktree Capital Management. The acquisition, which took place in 2021 for £140m, is a significant step in WTW's ongoing partnership with Atomos. This deal strengthens WTW's position in the £2.2tn UK wealth management market, providing additional capital to support Atomos’ growth and expansion plans.
WTW, which powers Atomos' multi-asset investment offering, sees the investment as a natural progression of its successful partnership established in 2022. Mark Calnan, WTW’s Head of Investments for Europe, stated, "Our stake in Atomos enhances our ability to shape how the industry services the needs and aspirations of savers in the UK." He also noted that WTW’s experience in occupational pensions will now benefit Atomos' individual clients, especially as UK savers increasingly take responsibility for their retirement.
Atomos’ CEO Jonathan Polin highlighted the importance of this investment in supporting their ambitious growth strategy, stating that WTW’s involvement will further strengthen Atomos' client relationships and service offerings. Atomos has actively expanded its presence in the market through acquisitions, closing in 2023 with the purchase of Shore Financial Planning and Define Wealth.
As consolidation continues across the wealth management industry, this partnership underscores the growth potential of vertically integrated business models like Atomos.
